Triumph Hurdle

The Triumph Hurdle is a Grade 1 hurdle race in for horses aged four years only. It is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and is a top class race.

This is a real good race to get stuck into those leading horses over hurdles and the past 5 years winning results will show you the odds are around the 5/1 mark when looking at a bet.

This race can take a burden on young hurdlers. Those who have to race in handicaps after this race will carry high weight, notable when Made in Japan won this race in 2004 and Spectroscope in 2003 they never went on to win another race.

I like to focus on ex-flat horses that are entered to run in this race and a horse that has won last time out.

Horses who have won at Sandown are worth a second look in the Triumph.

Year Horse Trainer Odds
2010 Soldatino N Henderson 6
2009 Zaynar N Henderson 5.5
2008 Celestial Halo P Nicholls 5
2007 Katchit A King 5.5
2006 Detroit City P Hobbs 3.5

Some Stats we can use to our advantage:

14 of the last 16 winners won last time out.

12 of the last 17 winners were found in the first 4 of the betting market.

10 of the last 11 winners had a prep race in February (keep an eye on horses running in Feb)

Your selection should have won at least 50% of its hurdle races.

If your selection is an ex-flat horse looks for proven stamina and a good run over 1 mile 4 furlongs.

Nicky Henderson is the leading trainer in this race with an amazing 5 winners.
