The RSA Chase

The RSA Chase
The race is a Grade 1 chase over 3 miles and can be deemed the “Gold Cup” for the novice chasers.

It is run on the old course and 19 fences have to be jumped.

This is a really good race to get involved with and is a good money spinner for backers. I have won in this race the last 4 years going by my form guide.

I like to look at a horse that has a good hurdle rating, so look for those rated 133 or more.

Last year Weapons Amnesty was my NAP of the festival. He was clearly very good at the distance and had real decent chase form.

Looking at the last 5 year results we see that anything Paul Nicholls enters is worth a good look at in the betting market.

Year Horse Trainer Odds
2010 Weapons Amnesty C Byrnes 10
2009 Cooldine W Mullins 2.5
2008 Alberta’s Run Jonjo O’Neill 4
2007 Denman P Nicholls 1
2006 Star De Mohaison P Nicholls 14

Some useful stats we can use to pinpoint the contenders are below;

The last 47 winners of this race had run that same year so don’t go looking for a horse that has been off the track for some time.

The last 11 winners had run at least 3 times over fences and hurdle form is a must.

A near 100% record for horses that had finished 1st or 2nd last time out.

Horses who race up with the pace seem to do well in this race. Although the winner last year was going very well behind the pace, the chase form over 3 mile stood up to merit.

I would always side with a horse that raced in NH races instead of flat races when they started racing.

It is worth pointing out that the record for Feltham Chase winners in this race is poor and I have made more money going against them on the day as they are always well backed due to the recent win. Just look at the Feltham winner last year, Long Run – how many of you were backers?

The longest-priced winners since the 60’s are Hussard Collonges in 2002 and Canny Danny in 1983, both at odds of 33/1, with Arkle the shortest-priced winner at 4/9 in 1963, who then went on to to become a brilliant steeplechaser.
